Accessibility Statement

Last updated: 20 May 2026

Accessibility is infrastructure, not a feature.

This is a founding principle of Techies Africa — one that shapes every platform we build, including this website. We target WCAG 2.1 Level AA conformance across all our properties.

Our commitment

We design and build for access by all users, including people who use screen readers, keyboard navigation, voice control, or other assistive technologies. Our standards include:

  • WCAG 2.1 Level AA — our baseline standard for all new pages and components
  • Keyboard navigability — every interactive element is reachable and operable without a mouse
  • Screen reader support — semantic HTML, ARIA labels and live region announcements throughout
  • Colour contrast — minimum 4.5:1 ratio for body text, 3:1 for large text and UI components
  • Focus management — visible focus indicators on all interactive elements
  • Reduced motion — animations respect the prefers-reduced-motion media query
  • Responsive design — all content is accessible from 320px viewport width upward

Technical approach

This website is built with React and server-side rendering, using semantic HTML5 elements. Key accessibility implementations include:

  • Skip-to-main-content link visible on keyboard focus
  • lang="en" set on the HTML element
  • Landmark regions: banner, main, contentinfo, navigation
  • All images have descriptive alt text; purely decorative images are marked aria-hidden
  • Animated content (partner marquee) is paused when prefers-reduced-motion: reduce
  • Touch targets are a minimum 44×44px in line with WCAG 2.5.5
  • Form fields have associated labels; error states are announced to screen readers

Known limitations

We are actively working to improve accessibility. Current known issues include:

  • Media placeholders — product photography sections currently show gradient placeholders rather than real images. Final images will include descriptive alt text.
  • PDF documents — any documents linked from this site have not yet been reviewed for PDF accessibility.

Thatsign: accessibility as a product

Our platform Thatsign is itself an accessibility infrastructure product — providing real-time sign language translation for deaf and hard-of-hearing users in daily life, education and healthcare. Accessibility is not peripheral to our work; it is one of our primary reasons for existing.
